"I heard the author Richard Rodriquez, appearing on the PBS News Hour with Jim Lehrer, say that we are a nation of widows. I felt that it was the state of the world today. This is a haunting painting. Whenever I paint the people, the eyes go in last because then they become alive for me. All the women are in shock."
